PRESS RELEASE FROM FAIR VOTES FOR DORSET Jim Knight & Richard Drax Challenged On Electoral Reform
South Dorset MP Jim Knight and the Conservative Party’s Parliamentary Candidate Richard Drax have both been challenged by Fair Votes For Dorset to outline their views on electoral reform at a public meeting in Weymouth to be organised for Spring 2010 prior to next year’s General Election. Fair Votes For Dorset has been recently formed, with the support of local Liberal Democrat’ and members of the Green Party, Respect and the Citizens’ Action Party, to campaign for a referendum on changing the current First Past the Post electoral system to a more proportional and representative method of electing MP’s and local councillors. Fair Votes For Dorset have already me in Wyke Regis, Bridport and Swanage and are planning an active campaign to engage local electors in their bid to reform First Past The Post.
The public meeting would include a speaker’s platform made up of the South Dorset Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Ros Kayes, the Green Parts Parliamentary Candidate Brian Heatley, Respect spokesman Bernie Parkes, who fought South Dorset in the 2005 General Election and Citizens’ Action Party spokesman Richard Denton-White. The meeting will be chaired by a neutral editor from the local Dorset media.
‘ There is an overwhelming case to change this country’s ‘ past its sell by date’ voting system : especially here is marginal seat South Dorset where only a handful of voters determine the result on polling day,’ said Citizen spokesman Richard Denton-White.’ Poll after poll suggests that a majority of the electorate support a more proportional system. Only the indecision of Gordon Brown’s Cabinet and the implacable hostility of the Conservative Party is blocking change.’
Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate Ros Kayes challenged her New Labour and Conservative rivals to be clear of their position: ‘Jim Knight and Richard Drax need to have the courage to show the local public the colour of their money on reform. If they refuse to join us on the platform, we can all draw our own conclusions!’
‘The Green Party have always been committed to electoral reform, ‘said their parliamentary spokesman Brian Heatley: ‘The voting public deserve to be treated with respect and given an opportunity to hear what the mainstream parties think.’
‘It is clear that some ministers in Gordon Brown’s Cabinet want to see referendum on the voting system and are less that impressed by Gordon Brown’s equivocation. What does this minister think? Jim we’d like to hear! As an active trades unionist I fully support a change in the way people vote. Democracy must enable electors to make a real choice,’ said Bernie Parkes the respect spokesman.
Fair Votes For Dorset are now awaiting a pre-christmas response to their Spring public forum invitation from Jim Knight and Richard Drax.
